A Fine English Mansion
Naveen Marasinghe asked:
Port Eliot in South England is the seat of the extremely wealthy Eliot family that is one of England’s most respected noble families. The head of the family is Lord Eliot, Earl of St. Germans and their large house which sits on an even larger estate stretches from the village of St. Germans all the way to the neighboring villages of Tideford, Trerulefoot and Polbathic.
The history of the Eliot house can be traced back to the twelfth century AD when it was originally built as a monastery for the St. Germans Priory Church which was situated next door. During the 17th and 18th centuries the building was substantially altered and remodeled by the well known architect Sir Joane Soane. During the later part of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century the Eliot family invested heavily in their estate. They constructed numerous farmhouses, fisherman’s cottages and other dwellings across their land. Some of these buildings have since been sold while others are leased out to close family members and friends for holidaying.
A number of festivals have been held here at Port Eliot, during the 1980’s a festival named ‘Elephant Fayre’ was organized with reference to the elephants on the Eliot family crest. In recent times it has become famous for the annual Port Eliot Literature Festival that is held every July. This annual event draws in giants from the world of modern literature such as Hanif Kureishi, Hari Kunzru and Louis de Bernieres who have participated in the festival previously.
Located close to many a Plymouth hotel Port Eliot and its grounds are open to the public during certain days. This is a great historical and cultural attraction for tourists as well as lovers of English literature.
